If you’re applying to drive for a Private Transportation Company (PTC) like Uber or Lyft in Toronto, you’ll need to complete a city-approved training course and submit your completion certificate as part of your licence application, as required by the City of Toronto.

At the end of that course, you’ll take a final test to confirm your understanding of the material. In this post, we break down how the PTC Licence Test is formatted and what kinds of topics are tested.

What is the Format of the PTC Licence Test?

If you take the vehicle-for-hire course with DrivePro, you’ll complete both the course modules and final exam entirely online. When you start the exam, you’ll be asked to activate an online proctoring tool that monitors the session to verify the test is completed independently.

The test is multiple choice and includes 50 questions based on real situations you might run into while driving passengers in Toronto. You’ll need a score of 70% or higher to pass.

DrivePro gives you up to five test attempts at no extra cost. If you don’t pass the first time, you can review the course material and try again without paying more.

What is Tested?

The PTC Licence Test is based on the topics covered in the City-approved vehicle-for-hire course. Questions focus on how you apply what you’ve learned in real driving and passenger situations.

You can expect questions in these main areas:

  • Passenger and Road Safety: Inspecting your vehicle, defensive driving habits, managing difficult situations with passengers, and responding to emergencies.
  • City Driving: Navigating dense traffic, sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, handling frequent stops, and staying alert in high-density areas like downtown Toronto.
  • Supporting Passengers with Accessibility Needs: Assisting passengers with mobility devices, understanding accessibility requirements, and providing safe, inclusive service.
  • Preventing Discrimination: Recognizing discriminatory behaviour, understanding how bias can affect service, and responding to passengers in a professional and compliant way.
  • Rules and Regulations: Laws and regulations that apply to vehicle-for-hire drivers, including licensing requirements, insurance and safety standards, record-keeping, and compliance with local bylaws.

Final Thoughts

The PTC Licence Test isn’t meant to be intimidating, but it does require you to pay attention throughout the vehicle-for-hire course. If you focus on understanding the course content and thinking through real-life scenarios, you’ll be set to pass without any issues – especially with DrivePro’s option to review the material and retake the test if needed.
