If you’re planning to drive for a rideshare, taxi, or limousine company in Toronto, you’ll need to get a Private Transportation Company (PTC) Licence. One of the first steps in that process is completing a city-approved driver training course and passing the final test.

In this post, we break down whether you need to take the test, how it’s formatted, and what you’ll be expected to know before you take it.

Do I Need to Take a Test to Get My PTC Licence?

Yes. At the end of the mandatory vehicle-for-hire course, you’ll need to pass a final exam to receive a certificate of completion.

Taking and passing this course is the first step toward getting your PTC licence, because you’re required to submit your completion certificate when applying to drive for a PTC company like Uber or Lyft. The City mandated the vehicle-for-hire course to ensure that all private transportation drivers understand key safety, accessibility, and customer-service principles before driving passengers.

What is the Format of the Test?

If you take the vehicle-for-hire course with DrivePro, both the course modules and final exam are completed entirely online. When you begin, you’ll be asked to grant access to a digital proctoring system which will monitor your session to ensure you complete the exam fairly.

The assessment is multiple choice and includes 50 questions, all based on real scenarios you may encounter while driving passengers in Toronto. To pass, you’ll need to score 70% or higher.

With DrivePro, you’ll have up to five free test attempts. That means that if needed, you can go back to review any areas you’re unsure about, and retake the test without any extra cost.

What is Covered on the Test?

Everything that appears on the test comes directly from the material taught in the training course, including:

  • Safely Transporting Passengers: Understanding how to maintain safe driving habits, manage passenger behaviour, respond to emergencies, and properly inspect your vehicle.
  • Navigating City Driving: Learning strategies for handling high-pedestrian areas, bike lanes, and other everyday realities of driving in Toronto.
  • Driving Passengers with Accessibility Needs: Learning how to offer respectful service to passengers with disabilities or accessibility needs.
  • Anti-Racism and Discrimination: Recognizing and preventing racism and discrimination in the vehicle-for-hire industry.
  • Laws that Govern Vehicle-for-Hire Drivers: Understanding and complying with the key licensing, insurance, safety, and record-keeping laws that apply to all PTC drivers in Toronto.

Once you complete the course modules, you’ll already be familiar with every topic that appears on the test.

Final Thoughts

The test at the end of the vehicle-for-hire course is designed to ensure that you understand the essential responsibilities of the job – from passenger safety to compliance with the City of Toronto’s by-laws. With DrivePro, you can complete the entire process online, learn at your own pace, and take advantage of multiple test attempts to build confidence before you apply for your licence.
