Congratulations on completing your PTC licence training course – it’s a big milestone. From here, getting on the road with a rideshare company like Uber, Lyft, or Hopp comes down to four steps: choosing a platform, confirming your vehicle qualifies, gathering your documents, and passing a background check.
In this post, we break down each of these four steps.
Step 1: Choose a Rideshare Platform
Your certificate qualifies you to drive with any rideshare company operating in Toronto. The three main platforms currently accepting drivers are:
- Uber — Sign up at uber.com or through the Uber Driver app
- Lyft — Sign up at lyft.com/driver or through the Lyft Driver app
- Hopp — Sign up at gethopp.com/en-ca/driver
You’re not limited to one – many drivers sign up with multiple platforms to maximize their earning opportunities.
Step 2: Make Sure Your Vehicle Qualifies
Before you apply, it’s worth confirming your vehicle meets the following requirements shared by all three platforms:
- Is seven years old or newer (2019 or newer for 2026)
- Has four doors and five to eight seats (including the driver’s)
- Is not salvaged or rebuilt
- Is registered with valid Ontario licence plates
- Is equipped with snow or all-season tires from December 1 to April 30
If your current vehicle doesn’t qualify, both Uber and Lyft offer leasing, rental, and financing options through their partner programs.
Step 3: Gather Your Documents
All three rideshare platforms require essentially the same set of documents, so it’s worth getting everything in order before you start any application. Missing or incomplete documents are one of the most common reasons applications get delayed.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- PTC Licence Training Certificate: If you completed your course with DrivePro, your certificate is available in your learning portal.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence: Your licence must be Class G, as G1 and G2 licences are not accepted.
- Proof of Work Eligibility: Such as your Canadian passport, birth certificate, permanent resident card, or work permit.
- Ontario Vehicle Registration: Both sides of the green slip for the car you plan to drive.
- Vehicle Insurance: Your pink slip, showing your name, insurer, policy number, and expiry date for the same car.
- Safety Standards Certificate (SSC): Your vehicle must be inspected by a licensed mechanic. Upload the SSC within 36 days of the inspection date.
- Profile Photo: A clear photo of yourself with no hats, sunglasses, or hoodies.
Step 4: Pass Your Background Check
Every platform conducts a criminal background check and a review of your driving record as part of the application. For Uber and Lyft, this is handled through their own internal screening process. Hopp uses a third-party provider called Certn. No extra steps are needed from you here. It’s a standard part of every application, and the platform walks you through it when you apply.
Final Thoughts
Getting on the road after completing your training is mostly a matter of having the right documents ready and knowing what each platform expects. By following the four steps above, you’ll be accepting rides before you know it.
